Early life Cropper was born Stephen Lee Cropper on a farm outside Dora, Missouri. In 1950, his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee. At age ten, he strummed a guitar for the first time, his brother-in-law's Gibson. Cropper received his first guitar at age 14, and started playing with local musicians. His hero at the time was Lowman Pauling of the Winston-Salem, NC band, The Five Royales. The Stax years (1961-1970)

As the original guitarist of Stax Records house band Booker T. The
M.G.s., Steve Cropper has had a storied career. Voted #36 on Rolling
Stones 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time, Cropper has worked with blues
legends such as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and the Blues Brothers Band.
His debut album on 429 Records is a tribute to RB and doo wop act, The 5
Royales. The collection features reworked versions of the groups most
enduring songs, and includes duets with Lucinda Williams, Bettye LaVette,
John Popper, Sharon Jones, and others
